Lindy Morrison named 2014 recipient of Ted Albert Award

Musician, teacher, and advocate Lindy Morrison has been named as the 2014 recipient of the Ted Albert Award for Outstanding Services to Australian Music. The annual award is decided by APRA’s Board of Writer and Publisher Directors, with the recipient deemed to have made an outstanding contribution to Australian Music over a number of years.

Morrison certainly fits the criteria: aside from her decade behind the drum-kit in one of the country’s finest musical exports, The Go-Betweens, Morrison teaches Music Business at Sydney Institute Ultimo, is the National Welfare Co-ordinator for musical charity Support Act, and sits on the board of PPCA. Last year, she received an Order of Australia medal, for her services to the industry.

Talking to TMN earlier this year, Morrison acknowledged her many hats in the industry. “I’m constantly amused by what occupation I have to put down when I’m filling out paperwork”, she said. “I make a decision based on how I want them to treat me. The last time I was at a dentist, I wrote ’social worker.’ Because that’s how I wanted them to see me. If you want to be treated like you’re working in side-show alley, then put ’musician’.”

The award will be presented to Morrison at the APRA Music Awards on June 23 in Brisbane, the town in which The Go-Betweens were formed.
