Here are the six Aussie DJs in the global top 100

In a further indication of Australia’s presence in the global EDM, a number of Australian names made it onto the annual DJ Mag’s Top 100 DJs list for 2017.

The list, which has been collated since 1997, is voted for by the title’s readers.

This year sees Alison Wonderland join the poll for the first time.

NERVO

Grammy-winning Nervo aka sisters Liv and Mim were ranked at #43, up three spots from last year.

This year they’ve been “touring like crazy”, telling the magazine they do 200 shows a year.

There were also the NERVONation parties in Miami, Austria and Ibiza.

Their new music was released through labels as Ultra, Spinnin’, Big Beat, Cr2 and Armada Music.

Their track with Sofi Tukker called ‘Best Friend’ was picked up for a major sync with iPhone 8.

The track ‘The Other Boys’, the collaboration with Nile Rodgers, Kylie Minogue and Jake Shears which topped the US Club charts and #5 in Argentina when first released in 2015 was a summer hit in Europe this year.

TIMMY TRUMPET

Timmy Trumpet leaped 37 spots to #43 after debuting the poll last year.

His current massive and sold out UK and European tour, which wraps up on November 18 in Germany, continues in the Czech Republic. Before then he does shows through Australia and Bali.

What’s helping him grow as a live drawcard is that his classical training at the Sydney Conservatorium Of Music (before he got expelled) is the way he mixes live instrumentation with a traditional DJ set.

He remains in demand for remixes, his latest being for Australian house act Throttle’s ‘Baddest Behaviour’.

CARL COX

Part-time resident in Frankston, Melbourne, the British DJ took a breather this year, and still climbed up 12 spots to #62.

He’s been running the Carl Cox Motorsport team and cranking up his charity work.

He still did 50 shows this week, including a couple of epic Pure Carl Cox shows in Ibiza and festival appearances at Ultra, Mysteryland and Sonus.

WILL SPARKS

His third appearance in the Top 100 saw the Melbourne-based spinner this year at #83 down ten spots.

This yearn ‘Young And Free’ (featuring Bollywood actress Priyanka Chopra) through Ultra Music kept him in the charts, while he’s just dropped ‘Pirates’ with Ben Nicky following up ‘Take Me’ with Gloria Kim.

The 24-year old’s touring schedule is relentless, finishing off a major Australian run as well as global dates.

FLUME

Going up seven spots to #87, Grammy-winning Flume continued his world tour through 2017 while in August he notched up his 1 millionth subscriber to his YouTube channel.

In December he’ll be in Singapore, the Philippines, Indonesia and Hong Kong before returning to Australia for the summer festivals.

He’s also been working on new music with the closing of his successful Skin series, and collaborating with Lorde and Vince Staples.

DJ Mag said, “One of the elite breed of artists in this Top DJ list who don’t actually DJ, Flume’s seamless and sense-blurring live experience has been a hot ticket this year.

“Measured, restrained, slick and stylised, as his repertoire and experience have grown, his performances have become even more mesmerising and dynamic.

“Now a verified headliner, he’s able to bring massive crowds of tens of thousands to their knees with his daringly slow and mesmerising soul.”

ALISON WONDERLAND

Her background as a cellist and in a guitar band in her early days in Australia has helped her as a global live drawcard differing a refreshing difference to most EDM acts, and her first entry in the poll at #89.

Still riding off he success of her debut album Ride (which debuted at #1 on the Billboard Dance/ Electronic charts), she played main stages from Tomorrowland to EDC Vegas, Falls Festival to Lollapalooza and hosts a weekly show Radio Wonderland on Sirius XM’s Electric Area in the USA.

This week she winds up shows in Las Vegas and Los Angeles, before returning to Australia and New Zealand for her Warehouse shows.

In March she’s doing Lollapalooza shows in Argentina, Chile and Brazil.

“With a second album on the way, mooted to contain more star guests, expect Alison Wonderland to chart even higher in 2018,” DJ Mag predicts.
