Grammys bump Adele, Beyoncé back into US Top 10

The 137% sales jump for Adele after her sweep at the 59th Grammys in Los Angeles has seen the unstoppable 25 album jump from #21 to #6 in the latest US charts.

With sales of 30,000 (up 238%) and equivalent album units up 137% to 47,000, the 25 album’s US sales have now reached 9.24 million, Billboard reported.

The album also generated 14.1 million on-demand audio streams of its songs.

Hello, which won record and song of the year, had a sales spike of 175%. This was made up of 21,000 downloads and a 53% rise in on-demand streams to 4.4 million.

These additional sales of 25 are impressive. But it should be noted that in 2012, her 21 album shifted 730,000 after it too won the album and record categories.

Beyoncé, who performed during the show and won two Grammys on the night despite controversially missing out on the major trophy, also shot back into the Top 10. Lemonade rose from #33 to #9, with 1.4 million audio streams (up 69%) and 38,000 mix of CD, download and streams.

Bruno Mars, who dressed up as Prince for the all-star tribute to the Purple One, was rewarded with his album 24K Magic climbing from #7 to #2; the single he performed, That’s What I Like, enjoyed a 99% spike of streams to 9.4 million and a 306% growth of downloads to 85,000.

The Prince estate’s ferocious push to get his Warner Bros-era catalogue on the major streaming services certainly paid off, with fresh revenue being generated.

Over 24 of his albums registered on Spotify and Apple Music, streaming an astonishing 16.7 million times, which accounted for a leap of 5.500%. The most successful was the hits set 4Ever, which entered the charts at #33 after a 263% spike.

Let’s Go Crazy, which was performed by Mars and The Time during the tribute, saw sales soaring 338% to 6,000 downloads and streams up 19,200%.

Billboard also noted that the five titles nominated for album of the year had a 91% rise in equivalent album sales (136,000) and 103% in CD format (39,000),

Aside from 25 and Lemonade, the other three were Justin Bieber’s Purpose, Drake’s Views and Sturgill Simpson’s A Sailor’s Guide To Earth.

However the impact of the February 12 awards event, which was watched by 26.05 million American viewers on CBS TV, could not stop the Fifty Shades Darker soundtrack from debuting at #1, pushing Big Sean’s I Decided down to #3.

Featuring tracks by Zayn & Taylor Swift, Halsey, Sia, Nicki Minaj. Tove Lo, John Legend and Nick Jonas, the Fifty Shades Darker soundtrack had 72,000 sales, or 123,000 if other formats were factored in.

The soundtrack from the original 2015 film sold 2.2 million worldwide – of which 913,000 units were in the US, as of January 2017. Fifty Shades Of Grey generated two smash hit singles, by The Weeknd and Ellie Goulding.

A breakdown by Billboard of post-Grammys 2017 sales found that digital sales of the songs performed on the show rose by 140% to a total of 547,000. (Katy Perry’s Chained To The Rhythm was not included in the assessment, as it had only been released two days before the show).

The biggest selling song was Ed Sheeran’s Shape Of You. Already occupying lead position on the Top 100 for a fourth week, the track topped Billboard’s Digital Song Sales chart with a 74% jump to 200,000 downloads.

On-demand streams (audio and video combined) of songs performed on the show were up 30% from 70.8 million to 91.8 million.

One act that benefited from a performance and breakthrough artist win was Chance The Rapper. He obviously found new fans that night, as his streaming-only “mixtape” Coloring Book went from #40 to #22 in the charts. It generated 33.3 million streams, a rise of 89%.

Keith Urban’s performance of his single The Fighter led to 1.7 million streams (up 372%) and 45,000 downloads (up 574%).
