Gena Rose Bruce signs to Dot Dash/Remote Control: “I’m so glad Gena put her trust in us”

Melbourne singer-songwriter Gena Rose Bruce has found a home at Dot Dash/Remote Control.

Her long-awaited debut album Can’t Make You Love Me is out on June 28, while new single and video for ‘Angel Face’ premiered this morning.

“Dot Dash really gets behind their artist’s vision, they value what is unique to their artist,” Bruce tells TMN.

“Joining the roster amongst artists like Methyl Ethel, Carla Geneve and Gabriella Cohen – I feel lucky to be a part of it!”

Growing up under the influence of Nick Cave via her parents’ record collection and whom she regards as “a mentor” for her lyrics, Bruce has drawn comparisons to Mazzy Star and Angel Olsen although she was famously described on a podcast as “the love child of PJ Harvey and Nancy Sinatra”.

Remote Control co-founder Steve Cross told TMN that he wanted to release the album the moment he heard it.

“It’s a total “piece”, personal and intimate, overflowing with ideas and emotions.

“I wanted to know the person who had created it. I’m so glad Gena put her trust in us to work with her. This is very special.”

Bruce began to create a buzz around hometown Melbourne after releasing her debut EP Mad Love in 2016, produced by ARIA winner Steven Schram (San Cisco, Mojo Juju).

Can’t Make You Love Me was produced by Tim Harvey (Teeth & Tongue, Lisa Mitchell), and features Jade Imagine on bass and guitar.

She began work on the album in 2017, and two tracks ‘Coming Down’ and ‘The Way You Make Love’ were released independently last year.

In May she plays shows in Sydney and Melbourne behind ‘Angel Face’.
