Ed Sheeran’s ÷ has made $5.92M on Spotify

Ed Sheeran, one of Spotify’s major artists, has made US$5.92 million in streaming from his new ÷ album.

The album already distinguished itself on Spotify when all 16 tracks generated a total of 56.7 million plays in the first 24 hours of its release. That set a new Spotify record for most plays in a single day, beating the previous record set last year by the Weeknd’s Starboy.

Since then, the 16 tracks have collectively been streamed 1.18 billion times as of March 14.

Industry trade publication Music Business Worldwide crunched the numbers using a rate of $0.005 per stream. However, this number is based on industry estimates rather than Spotify’s claim.

If MBW had used Spotify’s 2013 calculation of $0.007 per-stream, ÷ would have been estimated to have brought in $8.29 million.

Shape Of You remains the most played track from the album, notching up an incredible 509.7 million plays to date and generating close to $3 million. It is now Spotify’s biggest song globally, with 7.5 million streams a day.

MBW’s estimates include Castle On The Hill at $1.1 million (237,654,602 streams), Eraser at $126,321 (25,264,210 streams) and Perfect at $190,798 (38,159,641 streams).

Not bad for a week’s worth for Sheeran, whose personal fortune currently sits at $33.5 million. He was listed at #82 on American business magazine Forbes’ 2016 Celebrity List.

In the US, ÷ debuted at #1 with sales of 322,000 albums following its March 3 release. That makes it the biggest selling album in the country this year so far.

As reported by TMN previously, the album has also broken a number of Guinness World Records including the fastest-selling album in the UK by a male artist, outselling the entire Top 500 in its first week and most amount of simultaneous UK Top 20 singles.
