City of Melbourne unveils Amphlett Lane

After a 19-month campaign by the music community, The City of Melbourne has unveiled Amphlett Lane in honour of the late Divinyls singer Chrissy Amphlett. It is situated in the central business district, off Little Bourke Street, between Spring and Exhibition.

The lane’s entrance has a mural by Tasmanian artist Peter Gouldthorpe which features the Geelong-born singer in her schoolgirl tunic and her pet dogs, and stencil work by Melbourne artist Damien Arena. Her black Pekinese Holiday (named after Billie Holiday) – which was inseparable with the singer in her last days – will be the “watchdog” of the lane.

The unveiling was attended by Lord Mayor Robert Doyle, Amphlett’s family including her widower drummer Charley Drayton, members of the Divinyls and Councillor Rohan Leppert, Chair of Council’s Arts and Culture portfolio, who played an instrumental role in pushing for the honour.

Also in attendance were media identities Jessica Adams and Jenny Valentish and Amphlett’s literary agent Fran Moore who spearheaded the campaign to honour her with a laneway. A petition was signed by 6,386 names including Molly Meldrum, Michael Gudinski, Suze De Marchi, Rick Grossman and actor Noah Taylor.

Lord Mayor Doyle stated, “This was just meant to be.” He added, “This will become a destination for music lovers, to remember a wonderful contributor to the world of music in Chrissy Amphlett.”

Leppert pointed out, “The City of Melbourne is dedicated to making sure Melbourne’s musical story is heard. Today marks a proud moment for our city, for Melbourne’s passionate music lovers and for family and friends of Chrissy Amphlett.”

An emotional Drayton said, “Nothing really lasts forever, but today’s a lot different – we’re all here in Amphlett Lane and it’s here forever”.

Addressing the couple’s young nephews Tom and Ben, “As you guys grow up and get to learn more about your Aunty, come here with your friends and tell them just how badass your Aunty is.”
