Chart Wrap: John Legend stays on top, but Derulo is climbing quickly

Hot 100 Greetings everyone and welcome back to work for 2014. I hope everyone had a nice break. After two weeks away from radio-land we’re back with our first chart of the year and John Legend reigns supreme again! Yes, the man who was out on tour in support of Alicia Keys last month has retained the #1 spot over the Christmas break. Jason Derulo’s Trumpets came in second, up from sitting in fifth place before the break. It’s also #11 on the Shazam Top Tags and #2 on the ARIA singles chart. Guy Sebastian’s Like A Drum us down to #3 after spending some time in second place; the single has had a huge run, and is deservingly still experiencing solid airplay. Runaway worldwide success Happyby Pharrell Williams is continuing its rise up our Hot 100. The single has been massive everywhere: it’s topped the ARIA singles and streaming chart this week and is fifthon the Shazam top tags chart. Side note: I recently DJ’d a 50th birthday and the contingent of children in attendance requested Happy a total of eight times. Rude by Magic! rounds out the top 5. Just outside the top 5, the unstoppable hit-machine Avicii occupies position 7 and 8 with Hey Brother and Addicted To You respectively. He’s in a good place before his headline tour of Australia later this month. Rudimental’s Free received a big jump in airplay over the break, moving up from #25 to #9; it’s also had a good week of sales, moving from #10 in ARIA singles to #5 – also currently sitting atop the Shazam chart. London Grammar’s Strong is up from #33 to #14, just before the debut by Tiesto’s new single Red Lights at #15. It’s a huge debut from Tiesto, obviously on a more radio friendly tip than his usual straight out rave, an easy decision for the world’s most popular DJ. Unsurprisingly, the biggest gain of the few weeks comes in the form of Beyonce’s XO moving from its debut position of #78 up to #22. The album was a monumental success and currently sits on top of the ARIA albums chart – it’s still #2 on the iTunes and the Billboard 200. Elsewhere, Joel Fletcher’s Swing has moved up to #25 from #51 and Bliss n Eso’s My Life just scrapes into the top 50, sitting at #49 up from #65.

ARIA Singles It’s a second Happy week for Pharrell Williams as his uplifting singlesits at #1 on the ARIA singles chart. It’s his first chart topper as a solo artist, although he score two last year with Daft Punk and Robin Thicke. Rudimental is at #5: their single Free –with Emeli Sande & Nas – has jumped five places over the course of the week. It’s the British quartet’s second top 5 hit following Feel The Love in July ’12. Joel Fletcher’s single Swing– featuring New Zealand rapper Savage – has wiggled its way into sixthplace this week. It’s the single’s ninthweek in the top 50 and is Joel’s first top 10 ARIA appearance. Ed Sheeran is in the same boat with I See Fire returning to its debut peak position of #10 following the release of the film in which it features, The Hobbit: The Desolation Of Smaug.

ARIA Albums Beyonce’s self-titled fifth album is on top of the Albums chart for a second week running, Beyonce is her first album to top the ARIA chart. 18 weeks after debuting at #2 on the chart last September, London Grammar returns to the top five at #4 with a 30-point jump. It comes off the back of the band’s recent national tour. The soundtrack to Disney’s Frozen sits just outside the top 10 at #11. It’s seen a good rise this week after debuting at #27 last week. John Legend is back in the top 20 for a second week after lead single All Of Me’s run at the top of the charts – the track sat at the top of the ARIA singles chart for three weeks, and is currently topping our Hot 100 Airplay Chart. Legend, indeed.
