Katy Perry is the first Twitter user to hit 100 million followers (but has the most fakes in the Top 5)

Last Friday, Katy Perry reached a new Twitter milestone as the first to hit 100 million followers.

To mark the occasion, the platform posted a video compilation of her tweets since joining Twitter in 2009 with a message, “Today, we #WITNESS history” and launched a custom emoji triggered by the #LoveKaty hashtag.

“Thank you, @Twitter, for always giving me an opportunity to have a voice!” the singer, who is one of the most famous women in the world, responded.

The business- and social media-savvy 32-year-oldwas a realtively early adopter of the platform, joining in February 2009, and was also the first to hit 50 million followers in 2014.

With over 8,500 tweets and sharing over 1000 tracks, photos and videos directly to them first, she’s created a loyal community worldwide.

This has translated to #1 debuts in the United States for her albums Prism and Teenage Dream, with the new Witness is currently #1 in 41 countries.

Her last world tour, behind Prism, between May 2014 and October 2015 grossed over $204.3 million from 149 shows with a total attendance of 1,984,503.

She has 24 million subscribers on YouTube and 11 billion views across her channels.

Last month, the video for her single Bon Appetit hit 16.8 million YouTube views in the first 24 hours. It was a new milestone for YouTube’s single-day views, the previous record holder being her 2013 video for Roar.

For the upcoming American Idol reboot, Perry is reportedly getting paid $25 million, more than any other judge on the show’s history.

Aside from sharing all personal and career ups and downs, she’s also used Twitter to effectively plug her endorsement deals with the likes of Cover Girl, Claire’s, OPI nail polish, Purr Perfume, and H&M.

That is why although she hasn’t toured for a year, she still rated at #95 in Forbes’ 100 highest-paid celebrities, tying with Chance The Rapper, with an estimated earning of US$33 million.

But the Twittersphere is where Katy Perry has long ruled.

Her fiery appearance at the 2015 Superbowl, riding to the stage singing Roar atop a giant mechanical tiger, received 248,000 tweets per minute. (This was admittedly helped by a befuddled-looking backup dancer in a shark costume – “Left Shark” instantly became the platform’s new favourite meme.)

This month she launched her Witness album with a 96-hour Big Brother-style “Witness World Wide” stream on YouTube to her fans. With cameras in every room of a house called Witness Headquarters, she let them watch her sleep and listen in on her most intimate conversations, including a therapy session.

According to YouTube, the livestream generated a total of 49 million views from 190 different countries.

Perry’s 100 million Twitter followers see her solidly ahead of Justin Bieber’s 96.7 million, with Barack Obama in third place with almost 91 million.

At fourth was Taylor Swift, with 85.1 million followers and Rihanna with 74.1 million followers rounds out the top 5.

However, TwitterAudit.com judges just 37% of Perry’s followers to be “real”, meaning over 62 million are estimated to be inactive, fake or bot accounts. By comparison, Swift’s are judged to be 83% real; Rihanna’s are 47% real, and Obama’s, 65%.
