Spotify video content as early as this week?

Video content could be appearing in Spotify as early as this week, say overseas reports.

In a quest to chase YouTube and Facebook, Spotify is set to introduce video to its Android app this week, with iOS rolling out by the end of next week in the UK, US, Germany and Sweden.

An Australian launch is not known yet.

Over the last few months, Spotify has been testing 10% of its users. The content includes short video clips as well as some original music-themed series from companies as Tastemade, and wider content from partners as ABC, Condé Nast Entertainment, Comedy Central, the BBC, Turner’s Adult Swim, TBS and Fusion

The beta version in the US included Epic Rap Battles as well as a viewers’ introduction to their hometowns and celebrities working with chefs.

Shiva Rajaraman, Spotify’s VP of Product, revealed, “We are at the end of a journey of testing. We are going out effectively as planned. Our goal was largely to get a wide breadth of content and experiment and test.”

He added: “Obviously our primary user is a music fan, and they are not necessarily leaning in and looking into the app,” he said. “So there are no particular recipes for how to get this right.”

All 75 million users will have access to Spotify’s video service. But the streaming video is limited to mobile apps.
