Composers from a rock music background made their mark at the 2014 Screen Music Awards, held last night at Sydney’s City Recital Hall.

One time John Farnham keyboard player David Hirschfelder won Feature Film Score of the Year for The Railway Man. The Oscar-nominated composer, who spends time between Los Angeles and Melbourne, has won six Screen Music awards including the International Achievement Award in 2002.

One time Custard and Polaroids frontman David McCormack and collaborator Antony Partos trumped Best Original Song Composed for the Screen for Don’t Let Go from the ABC hit series Rake.

One time Models keyboard player Roger Mason’s work on the ABC’s The Outlaw Michael Howe saw him take home the trophy for Best Music for a Mini-Series or Telemovie.

The International Achievement Award for 2014 was given to the composing partnership of Adam Gock and Dinesh Wicks of The D.A’s Office. Now most known for their TV work, Gock played in bands and joined his guitarist father Les Gock of Hush onstage. Wicks began working in a Sydney recording studio in his teens and produced a host of pop and rock bands.

Among the performers were The Bamboos and Clairy Browne & the Bangin’ Rackettes.

The night belonged to composer Cezary Skubiszewski who took three of the six categories he was nominated for. He won in the category of Best Music for a Documentary for Once My Mother and Best Soundtrack Album for The Broken Shore. His composer / producer son Jan Skubiszewski shared the award for their collaboration on Serangoon Road (Episode 6) in the Best Music for a Television Series or Serial category.
