Nick Jonas, Mary J Blige, Mariah Carey, included in Golden Globe Best Original Song nominations

Pop singers Nick Jonas, Mary J. Blige, Mariah Carey and Radiohead guitarist Johnny Greenwood are among the music identities who’ve found themselves on the 75th Golden Globes nominations list.

Jonas’ up-beat ‘’Home’ from Ferdinand is up for Best Original Song For A Motion Picture.

So too is Blige’s soul ballad ’Mighty River’ co-penned with Raphael Saadiq and Taura Stinson. Blige’s impressive performance also has her up for a supporting actress nod for the World War II drama Mudbound.

Carey is up for ‘The Star,’ her and songwriter Marc Shaiman’s uplifting ballad from the animated movie of the same title.

Jonas co-wrote ‘Home’ with mega hit songwriter Justin Tranter (Britney Spears, Selena Gomez, Justin Bieber)and Nick Monson.

The singer/actor had just returned from a promo trip to South America and Europe behind Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle and was in a deep sleep, missing out on frantic phone calls from the film’s director and his manager to tell him of the nomination.

Finally, his manager called a friend to drive over to his house and wake him up.

Trantor tweeted, “I can’t believe this! A golden globe nomination!? WOW!

“This song is so special to me, cus when I was a young queer kid I was beyond bullied at school, but at #Home I was always SO safe. My family thought my fem ways were fucking fabulous!”

Carey too seemed overwhelmed. “As songwriters, myself and my dear friend and collaborator Marc Shaiman are truly honored.

“What a humbling experience to be included in this group of amazing songwriters.”

However, Jonas, Blige and Carey may find it tough going against the more conventional composers.

History has shown that the Hollywood Foreign Press Assn., whose members decide the Golden Globes, love their musicals.

The favourite to win the category is the song from the P.T. Barnum musical The Greatest Showman, ‘This Is Me’, written by Benj Pasek and Justin Paul.

They won with ‘City of Stars’ from La La Land, which they wrote with Justin Hurwitz.

From the animated musical Coco – about a young boy battling his family over his desire to pursue a career in music – comes married couple Kristen Anderson-Lopez and Robert Lopez’s ‘Remember Me’.

Three years ago they took out the Oscar for Disney’s Frozen, and are currently working on Frozen 2 and the Frozen Broadway musical.

Lopez says that ‘Remember Me’ was written during a period when many family members and friends passed away.

Earlier this year he sang it at his mother’s funeral.

Over in the Best Original Score category is Radiohead’s Jonny Greenwood, up for his first Golden Globe nomination, for his work on Paul Thomas Anderson’s Phantom Thread.

But he’s up against some Hollywood composer heavyweights as Hans Zimmer (Dunkirk), John Williams (The Post), Alexandre Desplat (The Shape of Water) and Carter Burwell (Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri).
