Ill-health stops Genesis P-Orridge visit but exhibition continues

British art and music pioneer Genesis Breyer P-Orridge sincerely regrets having to cancel their Australian tour due to unexpected complications related to their ongoing struggle with chronic leukemia.

All tickets purchased to the February 2nd concert at The Substation in Melbourne will be refunded.

But the Loyalty Does Not End With Death exhibition, an Australian exclusive, will still be held at the Substation from February 2 to March 10.

It is the first significant survey of their work on display in Australia.

Curated by Brisbane’s Lawrence English, the exhibition features Genesis’ artworks and traces the development of the pandrogyne project as well as their interests in identity and transcendence.

“It explores their interest in the sacred and the profane and is a provocation against wholesale acceptance on normative relations, be they social, political, sexual or otherwise.

For over four decades Genesis has shattered boundaries and notions with an eclectic body of work that has seen h/er declared as one of the world’s most influential artists.

Working across art forms, Genesis has exhibited in hundreds of exhibitions worldwide over the past 46 years, including the recent retrospectives at the Andy Warhol Museum and the Rubin Museum of Art.

“We are heartbroken that Genesis and Edley will be unable to join us this January for what would have been their first solo visit to Australia,” says Lawrence English, Director of Room40.

“The work Genesis has undertaken, across music and art has been foundational and is a critical intergenerational connection between the countercultures of the mid 20th century and emergent projects around identity, transgression and transcendence in music and art today.

“We send our very warmest thoughts to them and hope the ongoing therapies are successful in treating their leukaemia.”
