Eurovision hit #1 on Twitter in Australia

Australians took to social media in droves for the Grand Final of the Eurovision Song Contest on Sunday night. Six million tweets were sent around the world during the four-hour broadcast – a million more than last year’s Grand Final.

The hash tag #SBSEurovision trended at #1 in Australia and was ranked #4 worldwide. According to social media researcher Thinktank Social, Australians contributed to 12% of the conversation.

Globally, Guy Sebastian’s performance was the third most tweeted moment, after performances by the entrants from Georgia and Spain.

The most tweeted about nations during the final were Sweden, Spain and Russia.

Eurovision 2015, Eurovision, Eurovision’s Greatest Hits and Eurovision Song Contest 2015 drew a total of 112,000 Video Chapter Views – double that of unique browsers through May.

SBS reported that while the Grand Final scored 263,000 Australian metro viewers for the 5am live broadcast and 592,000 metro viewers for the evening repeat, figures set new records for the two Semi-Finals in the history of its broadcasting Eurovision.

Semi-Final 1 on Friday drew an average audience of 661,000 (500,000 metro and 161,000 regional) and a peak audience of 869,000 (metro 672,000, regional 197,000). The figures were 6.6% on last year. The 2015 broadcast was most watched in the 16-39 metro demographic.

Semi Final 2 on Saturday had an average of 880,000 (metro 639,000, regional 241,000) and a peak audience of 1.074 million (metro 755,000, regional 319,000).
