Drake sells over 600K copies of Views in one night

Drake looks like he’s having his biggest week of his career with new album Views. It had sold 630,000 copies in one night on iTunes, according to Republic Records – and set for a spectacular #1 debut in the United States this week, the biggest so far in 2016.

It is expected that the album will shift between 800,000 and 1 million by May 5. Views is only released in iTunes and Apple Music, and is not on CD or vinyl format as yet.

If it does hit the magic million mark, Views will be the 21st album to do so. If it goes the lower end, it will be the 10th album in the past ten years to shift 800,000. It will be the first to do so since Justin Timberlake’s The 20/20 Experience sold 968,000 in its first week in 2013.

The Canadian hip hopper excitedly told the audience at a Views listening party in Toronto of the 630,000 achievement. Just hours before, he gave an impromptu performance outside the Toronto Raptors basketball game.

As an indication of how his career has rocketed, What A Time To Be Alive (with Future, in 2015) sold 375,000 first week and If You’re Reading This It’s Too Late (2015) did 535,000 in three days. These two debuted at #1 in America, as did Nothing Was the Same, Take Care (2012) and Thank Me Later (2010).

Meantime, his single One Dance has become his first chart topper in his native Canada and breaking records in the UK. The inclusion of One Dance and previous singles Hotline Bling and Pop Style will mean that the number of their streams will be weighed in to the album’s total sales.
