Call It A Hunch: The Nights – ’Double Slit’

In this new regular feature, TMNzooms in on a track that’s picking up serious buzz. This week, we caught up with Sydney trioThe Nights. Their throbbing, luminous trackDouble Slit has copped airplay on Unearthed and triple j, but also found itself at #16 on Shazam’s Future Hits chart last week, having notched up over 4000 Shazams (and over 7300 at the time of writing a week later).

The track is aptly named:like a slinky skirt slit to the thigh, we reckon it’s got serious legs.

Who are you?

We’re a three-piece electronic act out of Sydney, made up of Walter, Rob, and myself (Tom). Individually, the three of us have diverse backgrounds inmusic, design and art, but collectively, it’s all about the music. We’ve recently released our EP Beyond Desire and we couldn’t be happier with the positivereception it’s been getting!

Are you signed or unsigned? Do you have a manager? A publicist? An M&M sorter?

We’re unsigned and management-free at this stage, though we teamed up with Thinking Loud for the promo of our release. We haven’t got an M&M sorter yeteither, though we desperately need one; Walter won’t eat yellow M&Ms.

Tell us about Double Slit!

Double Slit initially came from a sonic experiment to try and create a track with all the synth lines coming from a single synthesiser – the DSI Mopho X4. Withinthese confines, I wanted to create something that was abstract, yet danceable as a closing track for our EP. So I’d jammed out and recorded the initial idea inmy studio; with a sequenced bass line and some silly synth sounds that I’d made over a beat. I then presented the idea to Walter, and he edited andstructured out a breakdown in a couple of hours. Rob added some icing to the mix from there, and then it was done. It all happened very quickly and naturally, which is always a bonus.

We’re proud of the result –as an electronic track, we think it sounds quite ‘alive’ as a result of it being conceived from jamming. Perhaps people areresponding to this more organic approach, too.

Double Slit has also been gaining some good traction lately; as of this week it’s currently #2 on Spotify’s Australia Viral 50, and #26 on their Global chart, andis also #1 on Triple J Unearthed Electronic charts. We’ve been getting some solid spins on triple jas well, which has helped with exposing us Australia-wide.

Which Australian act would you most love to open for or collaborate with?

It’s hard to pick just one! We’re big fans of Jagwar Ma, Harvey Sutherland, and Seekae, and would absolutely love to open for, or collaborate with any of theseguys.

What’s next?

We’re busy balancing our schedules between writing tracks for our next release, and rehearsals for our live show, which we’ll be debuting very soon. We’reexcited to show everyone what we’ve been working on, in both regards – stay in touch via our Facebook page for updates…
