Aussie radio re-ignites Sam Smith love affair ahead of new album

UK singer-songwriter Sam Smith is preparing to take over Australian radio in 2020, with their latest single ‘I’m Ready’ with Demi Lovato debuting at #22 on the TMN Hot 100 this week.

The single is the first from their forthcoming, as-yet-untitled third studio album, to be released via Capital Records later this year.

The tune joins two other Smith singles on the TMN Hot 100 powered by Radio Monitor, with ‘To Die For’ sitting at #26 in its 10th charting week and 2019 smash hit ‘Dancing With A Stranger’ at #37 more than a year after its chart debut.

Smith is yet to summit the chart since they and Normani achieved the feat with ‘Dancing…’ in February of 2019, their third #1 airplay hit in Australia, following ‘Too Good At Goodbyes’ and ‘Promises’ with Calvin Harris.

Few would bet against Smith taking the top spot at some stage during their next album cycle, and ‘I’m Ready’ should be knocking at the door over the next couple of weeks.

Smith asked to be addressed by the pronouns they/them in 2019, speaking about embracing the feeling of being non-binary.

Kyle Sandilands won’t be respecting Smith’s choice of pronouns, however, with the KIIS FM host declaring “it’s too much,” on his show this week.

“I’m sick of this. Why should I have to do this?” said Sandilands. “I’ll now be allowed to use the N-word because I identify as a Black woman. Is that right? Is that how it works?”

Meanwhile, The Weekend re-claims the #1 charting position this week after surrendering top spot to Harry Styles, who briefly claimed his first TMN Hot 100 #1 thanks to ‘Adore You’.

It’s the eighth non-consecutive week atop the chart for ‘Blinding Lights’, which is one of several tunes in the chart’s Top 20 to have gained significant traction on social video app TikTok.

Radio is also pushing The Weeknd’s latest single ‘In Your Eyes’ which climbs six frames from #18 to #12 this week, a new peak.

Fellow TikTok hit ‘Say So’ by Doja Cat continues its climb, with a new high of #2 this week, while New Zealander BENEE finds herself in her highest ever Hot 100 charting position as ‘Supalonely’ featuring Gus Dapperton rises to #8.
