Adele’s ’25’ climbs over 4m mark in US

And those sales just keep on climbing.

In the United States, Adele’s 25 has sailed over the 4 million mark. After setting a new record with 3.38 million first week (November 20 to 26), second week sales (from November 27) notched up another 650,000, according to Nielsen Music.

It is tipped to hit 1 million by the time calculations stops tomorrow (Thursday).

25’s American sales made up 41% of all rack movements that week, reported Billboard. It ripped apart figures from Justin Bieber’s Purpose (290,090 in its second week) and One Direction’s Made In The A.M (108,445 in its second week).

25 is the first album to sell over 4 million copies in a calendar year in the United States since 2012.

The last one just happened to be Adele’s 21 which that year shifted 4.41 million before totalling out at 11.2 million (globally 30 million). 21 is now back in the US Top 10.

Before 21, the album to hit 4 million in a calendar year was… Adele’s 19,which in 2011 moved 5.82 million.

In Australia, as reported in TMN, it debuted at #1 this week and was triple platinum out of the box. Impressive as those figures are, but the record is still held by Guy Sebastian whose debut album Just As I Am notched up 5 x platinum in its first week in December 2013.

Chart historian Gavin Ryan notes that Adele now rates 8th of artists with most accumulated at #1. This week, she raked up 33 weeks at album top spot, behind Pink’s 34 and before Jimmy Barnes’ 32.

In other achievements by 25:

* Biggest first week sales in the UK with 800,000 copies –more than the next 86 albums combined. It also set a new milestone with biggest first day moves of 300,000.

* Shot to #1 in iTunes chart in 106 out of 119 countries.

* Beat Beyonce’s record of fastest selling album on iTunes (617,000 in three days) by moving 900,000 on the first day.

* Sold more in its first week than 21 sold in its first 28, and nearly five times what it sold in its peak sales. It also sold more than Adele’s 19 sold in its entire seven years out in the world.
