A week after Double J put her ‘The Real World’, roots outlaw singer-songwriter Freya Josephine Hollick has signed management with Melbourne manager George Hatzigeorgiou.

The two have worked together for the past two years on her PR, and management seems “an extension of the easy nature of that association … and most importantly at a time when everything in Freya’s orbit seems to be lining up,” according to Hatzigeorgiou.

“We are sitting on an incredible record cut in the Mojave Desert with Lucinda Williams’ band Buick 6, everything released so far has hit the mark at radio, and we still have another cracking single to come before the album drops.”

Hollick, based in Ballarat in regional Victoria’s goldfields, is hailed as part of the latest wave of alt-country, alongside Kacey Musgraves, Orville Peck, Yola and Colter Wall.

After dropping her second more eclectic album Feral Fusion through Blind Date Records in mid-2018, Hollick travelled to the US courtesy of a grant from Creative Victoria.

Arriving in Joshua Tree, California, work began with Buick 6 (they’d already set arrangements to her rough piano & guitar demos) and guitarist Greg Leisz, known for his work with Beck, Eric Clapton, Aaron Neville and Sheryl Crow, in the desert at Rancho De La Luna studio run by Eagles of Death Metal guitarist Dave Catching.

The new single is about the devastation of Mother Earth.

“Mass extinctions, soil erosion, melting ice caps, forests levelled, poisoned water, and increasingly extreme weather events,” Hollick said.

“We are living in complete denial of a truth that has been out there for longer than anyone is prepared to admit.”

The track is a taster to the third album, The Real World, set for release in October 2021.

Hollick continues to be booked through Sean Simmons at Press Play.

Hatzigeorgiou’s management roster also includes Melbourne queer performer Max Lawrence.
