Vevo launches on Google TV and Android devices in Australia

The Vevo app has been made available on Google TV and other Android TV OS devices.

It’s also available in the US, Canada, New Zealand, UK, France, Italy, Spain, Germany, Mexico and Brazil.

It continues Vevo’s move to position itself at the intersection of digital and television, and reflects how music video viewers continue to shift towards internet-enabled, connected TVs (CTV).

The platform’s CTV ad revenue now represents 50% of its upfront revenue, up from 4% at the beginning of 2020.

Vevo’s catalogue of videos includes official releases, live performances and original content.

Vevo’s president of sales & distribution Kevin McGurn, said Google is a critical distribution channel for Vevo as it brings a huge global audience to the platform.

The company’s mission, he said, is to maximise the commercial and promotional value of the music video.

“So, as consumer viewership trends of music videos continue to shift towards internet-enabled CTV in today’s world, we continue to expand our distribution to meet consumers in those environments they are actively frequenting,” he added.

“Music videos are not only insanely popular, but they are powerful and highly-engaging content to advertise against due to the deep emotional connections that they forge with the viewer.

“They can feel deeply personal yet have mass appeal.”

In mid-January, Vevo updated its TV app to combine linear programming with search and discovery functions, with the interface reflecting a live TV experience.

It offers users videos auto-play upon entering the app, and personalised recommendations.

Vevo is available on YouTube, Samsung, Samsung TV Plus, Amazon Fire TV, Amazon Echo Show, PlutoTV, Apple TV, Roku, Comcast (Xfinity X1 and Xfinity Flex), VIZIO, Sky (NowTV and SkyQ), Foxxum, XITE, NetRange, Redbox, T-Mobile Play, Virgin Media, Xumo, Telstra, Foxtel, Fetch, Rogers, Shaw, Local Now, Google TV, Android TV and Vewd.

According to an Australian Communications and Media Authority study in September 2020, 64% of Australian adults have a smart TV and 60% access the ‘net through it.

That compares to 91% via mobile phones, 76% via laptop computers and 61% via tablets.
