Unified discuss Amity Affliction’s chart win

The Amity Affliction’s fourth record debuted at #1 on the ARIA Albums chart on Saturday.

Let The Ocean Take Me beat out the debuts of Passenger’s fifth album and Jack White’s second solo LP,  and kept Coldplay’s global #1 Ghost Stories at #4 after three weeks at #1.

The band topped the chart with 24,100 units sold; not only is the figure impressive because the band are a post-hardcore outfit from Gympie – or because the LP leaked two weeks before the official release date on June 6 – but because the album sold over 15,000 more than Passenger’s Whispers (9,077) in its first week, over 16,700 more than Jack White’s Lazaretto (7,320) and almost 18,000 more than Coldplay (6,100) this week.

The release of Let The Ocean Take Me marks the second time The Amity Affliction debuted at #1, following 2012’s Gold-certified LP Chasing Ghosts, and their fourth with Melbourne-based independent Unified, who manage the band worldwide and released the band’s first three LPs via its UNFD (then Boomtown) record label.

Unified’s New York-based Founder Jaddan Comerford is currently in London with The Amity Affliction. The band performed UK’s Download Festival on Sunday night alongside Avenged Sevenfold, Rob Zombie and The Offspring. Comerford told TMN the record’s DIY development and the groundswell created from Chasing Ghosts made its reception a different beast altogether when compared to their previous opus’.

“The album is better. The band made it in Troy [Brady, lead guitarist]’s studio on the Sunshine Coast with longtime friend and producer Will Putney. This made a huge difference in terms of comfort levels for the band.

“As far as the campaign goes, everyone was just more willing to support the band this time around. Last time they were taking people by surprise, this time, people knew what to expect.”

Before the album leaked in late May, Luke Logemann, Unified’s Head of Recorded Music, was confident the band would have a second ARIA #1. “I know the pre-order numbers from the first weekend were enough to land it at #1 most weeks so far this year,” he told TMN last month. But while an album leak can have detrimental affects on first-week sales, Comerford told TMN that in this case, it’s a great signifier of fan demand.

“In this genre, the more anticipated the album, the more chance there is of a leak. I actually think it might have helped sales, as people heard how good it was, and were able to spread the word.”

Let The Ocean Take Me was released in the US on June 12 and in the UK and Europe on June 13 on Roadrunner Records and distributed through Warner Music. Comerford tells TMN Unified are looking for a top 40 debut in the US.

The news continues the three-year-old label’s ARIA Chart success this year following the #5 chart debut of In Hearts Wake’s sophomore LP Earthwalker in May.

This week’s Top 5 ARIA Albums chart sales figures:

1) The Amity Affliction – Let The Ocean Take Me – 24,100
2) Passenger – Whispers – 9,077
3) Jack White – Lazaretto – 7,320
4) Coldplay – Ghost Stories – 6,104
5) Soundtrack – Frozen – 5,002
