triple j Unearthed pick of the week: November 8, 2013
I’m always stoked when I see a new tune from Melbourne stalwart Yeo pop up on his Unearthed page because you never quite know what you’re going to hear from him. The prolific bloke has been consistently heating up Unearthed since the site launched with his brand of brainy, kitchen-sink pop before turning his hand to a diverse range of sounds including rollicking bluegrass narratives and synth-drenched indie.
Yeo’s latest offering, Girl, continues the evolution with the studio whiz channelling the likes of Jai Paul for something that could best be described as soulful boom bap. What gets me most about this song – aside from the slinky synth lead – is how sparse it is. Yeo’s vocals are merely an interjection among the plush guitar loops and a speaker shaking bass throb. There’s just so much ‘space’ to play with here but Yeo never pushes his piece too fiercely, smartly letting you come back for more.
