‘They’re cool & nice’: Tim Minchin signs first-ever record deal

Despite his long and acclaimed career, Tim Minchin has never released a studio album.

Now he signs to BMG in an exclusive global label deal, ahead of the release of his debut record later in 2020.

Minchin is an award-winning composer, musician, comedian, actor, writer and director, and says BMG has given him the “freedom” and “confidence” to finally put a debut album together.

“I’ve been writing songs for 35 years, and have never released a studio album. Too many distractions,” he said.

“Signing with BMG has given me focus, and the confidence to aim for a record that isn’t defined by anyone else’s expectations. I’m loving the freedom, loving the process, and loving the team at BMG. They’re cool and nice.”

Minchin is set to perform at Splendour In The Grass this year as part of his latest live Australian tour kicking off later in March.

The tour follows his first live tour in seven years in 2019, the sold-out BACK tour that included a whopping 75-dates and over 180,000 tickets sold.

He’s set to release the first single from the forthcoming album on March 13, titled ‘Leaving LA’.

BMG Australia managing director said signing the deal was “a genuine honour” for the label.

“Tim Minchin is the rarest of talents – an incredible pianist, composer, playwright, actor and lyricist, amongst many other things,” added Johns.

“To have Tim sign his first ever record deal with BMG is a genuine honour for our entire team and a further indication that BMG is the destination for artists with international ambition and a demand to maintain creative control and ownership of their recordings.

“I know the world will fall in love with this absolute gem of a pop record and we can’t wait to help Tim share these songs”.

Among Minchin’s achievements, he’s sold-out world-famous venues including The Royal Albert Hall, O2 Arena and Sydney Opera House, as well as writing the music and lyrics for the Tony and Oliver-Award winning Matilda The Musical.

Minchin has also appeared extensively on television, radio, acted in live theatre shows, written children’s books and starred in movies, such as 2018’s Robin Hood.

His latest TV series Upright premiered on Foxtel in 2019 and Minchin was recently appointed a Member of the Order of Australia (AM) for his contribution to the performing arts and the community.
