Video app TikTok is searching for a head of music based in Sydney

TikTok looks set to officially launch an Australian office, a year after its Chinese owner Bytedance revealed it was scouting the market.

The popular video-sharing social network has 1.6 million Aussie users, according to a Roy Morgan research report in February.

It has advertised for a “rock star” head of music based in Sydney, “to support the TikTok music strategy and drive the success of Australian music on the platform”.

“You will be responsible for understanding emerging music talent, how they address TikTok’s creator ecosystem needs, and reaching out to these communities to onboard them onto TikTok.”

The successful candidate also requires a Bachelors Degree or 12 years of industry experience within a record label or distributor, or directly within artist management.

The role includes business partnerships with record labels and emerging and established artists and their teams, a knowledge of music licensing and working with policy and legal teams.

Earlier this year, TikTok began advertising for nine positions in this market.

TikTok has already worked with Australian brands like the AFL, Australian Reptile Park, BeautyCrew, Girlfriend and Junkee as it looks to build a domestic revenue stream.

The music-centric app has now been downloaded over 2 billion times globally, and 500 million times in the five months to the end of April.

According to the Roy Morgan research, Tik Tok is particularly popular with Australian women and girls, who make up over 1.1 million of its current local database.
