Taylor Swift, The Wiggles Dominate 2023 Spotify Wrapped

Taylor Swift, The Wiggles Dominate 2023 Spotify Wrapped

It’s official: Taylor Swift was ubiquitous in Australians’ wildest dreams in 2023.

The pop superstar reigns on Spotify’s 2023 Wrapped campaign for Australia, ahead of Canadian hip-hoppers Drake and The Weeknd, respectively.

Swifties made their icon No. 1 around the globe as TayTay also rules the global chart, which soaks up streaming data from Spotify’s 574 million users.

The top single for Spotify’s Australian users this year – more than 10 million of them – was Miley Cyrus’ “Flowers” which, earlier, had blossomed on the ARIA Chart for 12 weeks at No. 1, a year-best effort.

Among homegrown talent, The Wiggles came out on top.

The kids entertainers and Rolling Stone AU/NZ cover stars lead the top 5 Australia “Most-Streamed Local Artists” list, ahead of The Kid LAROI, Vance Joy, Flume and AC/DC, respectively.

After a record-smashing “Swift Sweep” on the ARIA Charts, and a ticket-selling frenzy for her upcoming seven-date stadium visit, Swift’s popularity with local Spotify accounts should come as a surprise to no one.

Expect Swift to figure prominently next year, thanks to her sold-out 2024 The Eras Tour dates in Sydney and Melbourne, which busted Ticketek’s historic pre-sales marks. Also, two more re-recorded album projects are in the works, with no confirmed release date.

The resurgence of country music is, however, a thigh-slapping result.

U.S. star Morgan Wallen, who achieved the ARIA Chart double in 2023, following a national tour, produced by Frontier Touring, was the fifth most-streamed act on Spotify in Australia this year.

And his 36-track LP One Thing At A Time was Australia’s most-streamed album, ahead of Taylor Swift’s Midnights and SZA’s SOS, respectively.

Overall, reads a statement from Spotify, “2023 was defined by the epic return of major female artists, sonic diversity across the charts, and a global music culture that saw the rise of powerful genres. Our top lists reflect these trends and the overall expansion of music and podcasts as Spotify continues to grow its user base.”

The top song by a local hero belonged to Vance Joy with “Riptide,” the evergreen number which this year celebrated its 10 anniversary and which won triple j’s Hottest 100 countdown following its release in 2013.

“Riptide” flowed ahead of The Kid LAROI’s “Stay” with Justin Bieber, and Dean Lewis’ “How Do I Say Goodbye,” respectively.
