Sam Smith’s In The Lonely Hour hits 2m in UK

Sam Smith’s remarkable 2015 has seen his In The Lonely Hour album sell an extra 1 million alone in the past 12 months in the UK.

The album has now hit the 2 million mark in the Grammy winner’s home country, reaching that milestone after selling an extra 14,074 copies this week.

According to Music Week, it is the sixth artist LP released this decade to have passed the 2 million mark. The others were Adele’s 21 (2011), Michael Buble’s Christmas (2011), Ed Sheeran’s + (2011) Emeli Sandé’s Our Version Of Events (2012), and Ed Sheeran’s x (2014).

In The Lonely Hour hit its first million in the UK last December. He was the only act to sell a million in both the UK and the US in 2014.

In related news, Smith’s Writing’s On The Wall is getting great global exposure with the James Bond movie Spectre earning US$300 million worldwide in its first two weeks.

In the first six months of this year, Smith topped 100 million streams. More than half of the UK streams of 2015 were by Smith or Ed Sheeran who notched up 170 million streams.

Smith is playing shows in Australia this month through Frontier Touring, which also has Sheeran in the country right after.
