Reclink Community Cup hits Adelaide for the first time

The annual music industry charity Aussie Rules football match, the Reclink Community Cup, will be held in Adelaide for the first time.

South Australian musicians and community media folk will take each other on at Adelaide Airport Stadium in West Thebarton on August 16.

Koral Chandler, guitarist of Adelaide band Koral & The Goodbye Horses, told TMN that the event was a “great cause.”

“We wanted to bring this event to Adelaide because it’s a great day for a great cause,” she said.

Chandler played at the Sydney Cup last year and was inspired to have a game that would bring South Australia’s media and musician community together. Together with CityMag Editor Farrin Foster, they head the Cup Committee, backed by Adelaide community radio stations Three D Radio, Radio Adelaide and Fresh927.

The musicians’ teams will be The Rockatoos and the media collective The Adelaide Anchors. The list of players will be announced shortly.

Much like the Cup matches in Melbourne and Sydney, the Adelaide event will also be family-friendly with bands, entertainment and food.

“Events like the Community Cup really demonstrate how important music is to South Australia,” said Lisa Bishop, General Manager of Music SA.

“Bringing together community radio personalities and other media with musicians creates a great atmosphere and builds camaraderie to create strong community ties.”

The Community Cup began 21 years ago in Melbourne, growing from an inaugural crowd of 2,000 to last year’s 13,500 at Elsternwick Park. It raised over $100,000 to help Reclink Australia deliver 10,000 sports and arts programs to help disadvantaged people across Australia. Ironically, Reclink lost $560,000 in Federal Budget funding in 2014. This year, the Melbourne play-off is on Sunday June 21.

The Cup, introduced to Sydney in 2011, this year sees the Sydney Sailors (media) take on the Western Walers (musicians) at Henson Park, Marrickville on Sunday August

In another first, Perth will also be hosting the Cup in 2015.
