PRESS RELEASE:

Following the hype of the debut show in April, Red Bull Sound Select returned in May with another sold out gig. An all-star Aussie Hip-Hop line up saw punters waiting at The Chippendale Hotel from 4pm to be first in line. The sophisticated bill was put together by LANEWAY FESTIVAL’s purveyor of taste; Travis Banko. The night centred around a celebration and exploration of Sydney’s rich cultural identity with a nod to the African heritage of the two Red Bull Sound Select artists, Sampa the Great and B Wise.

After two sell-out Red Bull Sound Select’s at the Chippendale Hotel, the popular monthly series is excited to announce a new venue – The Civic Underground.

The Civic Underground is a right of passage for Sydneysiders and is located in the heart of the city, offering punters three levels of awesomeness. The real fun kicks in downstairs underground, where the room is decked out with a world-class state of the art sound system. The new venue offers more capacity allowing more music lovers to experience Red Bull Sound Select.

The June Red Bull Sound Select showcase will ruffle some feathers as three electronic music innovators and visionaries will be rolled out for the next instalment.

Johann Ponniah of I OH YOU is back at it again with a surprising curation of inspired electronic beats. Ponniah brings an ultra dynamic collection of artists to the forefront who are re-shaping and redefining dance floors around the country in addition to taking their sounds to a global audience.

“For some time now I’ve been inspired by the quality of some of the up and coming electronic producers that have been coming out of Australia, so I’m really psyched to have been able to program some of my favourite artists for Red Bull Sound Select number 3. Whenever we’re programming a party I always have my dream line-up in mind and that never really ever falls into place but the stars seemed to align on this one! Particularly excited to be bringing Harvey Sutherland’s live show up to Sydney, I caught it at Meredith Music Festival last year and it blew my mind!”

Headlining the night is analogue synthesist Harvey Sutherland, playing a live show with his band Bermuda. A cult-figure in the scene, his music has been played and appreciated worldwide, with support from tastemakers Bradley Zero, Tom Noble and Motor City Drum Ensemble. He was named one of FACT Magazine’s “Australian Electronic Artists to Watch in 2015” and made his European debut in May 2015 with an 11-date club tour.Sutherland’s improvisational live show – equal parts 808 rattle and double disco clap – is an evolving, synthetic boogie exploration.

Joining the bill is experimental musician Lucy Cliché. Her music delivers a hard bitten exploration of how physicality and the ethereal can interact in music – heavy bass rhythms lock into pounding drums, washed over with synth chords and acid bleeps. Having cemented herself as a force in the Sydney DIY scene for over 10 years she is ever evolving as a solid fixture in the electronic universe.

Rounding out the bill is nuanced house musician Hubert Clarke Jnr. With a blissful ethos towards the creation of house music Hubert Clarke Jnr makes a conscious effort to balance a love for sampling with an equally strong passion for musicality and live performance. He has had a whirlwind 12 months after opening Sydney’s newest record store Outer Time Inner Space andreleasing his debut 12”, Al Dente on LA imprint 100% Silk to positive acclaim.
