Justin Hemmes buys another Sydney music venue

Sydney hotelier and nightclub operator Justin Hemmes has bought the iconic Newport Arms – a long time showcase space for live music – for a reported $50 million.

The deal was struck through his Mervilage Group and comes into effect in May.

The Newport Arms was run for almost 25 years by the Bayfield family. News of its going on the market in February saw interest from local and international hotel groups, developers and private equity funds, said Wayne Bayfield. He added he was pleased it was going to another family group.

Hemmes said, “The Newport Arms is undoubtedly one of Australia’s most iconic pubs. It is a spectacular property in a beautiful location and holds a very special place in the hearts of locals. Assets as unique as the Newport Arms deserve to be celebrated; we cannot wait to join the community.”

The Newport Arms follows Merivale’s purchase of Coogee Pavilion, another venue which also features live music.
