The 12th annual AIR Awards are going down tonight at Queen’s Theater in Adelaide.

While many indie acts like The Jungle Giants, Baker Boy, Stella Donnelly and more are eagerly awaiting the outcome of tonight’s artist awards, TMN thought we’d take a look at the independent labels battling it out for the top gong and a $20,000 digital marketing package, courtesy of independent ticketing agency moshtix.

The government giant in the game, ABC Music has had a lot of success this year with releases from Screemfeeder, William Crighton and more. None are more highly anticipated than Melbourne artist Mojo Juju‘s third album Native Tongue. Slated for release on August 24th, the first single and title track is already killing it, dominating the Amrap community radio charts two weeks in a row and being hailed as an important songwriting feat.

Milk! Records

Milk! Records has been going from strength to strength since it was founded by artist Courtney Barnett in 2012. The label has enjoyed a ridiculous run of releases in the last 12 months from the likes of Jen Cloher, Evelyn Ida Morris and Tell Me How You Feel, Barnett’s long-awaited follow-up album to breakthrough record Sometimes I Sit And Think And Sometimes I Just Sit.

Dot Dash Recordings

An Aus-centric offshoot of Remote Control Records, Dot Dash have been revelling in their artist’s successes over the last year. From signing Melbourne producer Katz at the start of 2018 to Jeremy Neale picking up the Grant McLennan Fellowship late last year, the label has been producing some winners. 2018 release highlight would have to be eccentric Melbourne groover Donny Benét‘s new album The Don.

Bad Apples Music

This label, born from the releases of hip hop artist and one half of AB Original BRIGGS, has been doing incredible work Indigenous artists in the Australian music community. Their artist roster includes the likes of Melbourne via the Northern Territory artist Birdz, 22-year-old Mildura MC Philly and Dreaming Prize-winner Nooky and more.

UNFD

Repping the heavier side of contemporary music, UNFD have had an amazing run of releases in the last 12 months from the likes of Northlane, Tonight Alive, Dream State, Hellions and many more. They’re not showing any signs of slowing down soon with cuts from After Touch and Hands Like Houses slated for release in the coming months.
