Four Aussies nominated for 2016 Grammy Awards

Melbourne’s Courtney Barnett and Hiatus Kaiyote, Perth’s Tame Impala and US-based country music star Keith Urban have been nominated for the 58th Annual Grammy Awards.

28-year-old Barnett, who last month took home four ARIA Awards, is up for Best New Artist alongside James Bay, Sam Hunt, Tori Kelly, and Meghan Trainor.

Tame Impala’s ARIA #1 LP Currents is up for Best Alternative Album against releases from Alabama Shakes, Björk, My Morning Jacket and Wilco. The psych-rock band were were nominated for a Grammy this year, in the Best Alternative Music Album category for their ARIA #4 LP Lonerism.

Hiatus Kaiyote’sBreathing Underwater is up against seven-time nominee The Weeknd and his track Earned It in the Best R&B Performance category. The future-soulfour-piece are also up against Tamar Braxton (If I Don’t Have You), Andra Day (Rise Up), and Jeremih Featuring J. Cole (Planes).

Keith Urban is nominated for Best Country Solo Performance for John Cougar, John Deere, John 3:16. He’s up against country music royalty Lee Ann Womack, Carrie Underwood, Chris Stapleton and Cam.

Compton hip hop luminary Kendrick Lamar leads the nominations with 11 nods in nine categories. Lamar has now topped Eminem as the hip-hop act with the most nominations in a single year.

Taylor Swift and The Weeknd are both up for seven awards, which takes Swift’s total nominations to 27, meanwhile Drake is up for five. None of Drake’s 2015 releases were nominated in the top categories, however he is up for Best Rap Song (Energy) and Best Rap Album (If You’re Reading This Its Too Late).

Alabama Shakes and Florence and the Machine are both up for four Grammys, and Kanye West, D’Angelo, and Diplo are up for three.

With the cut of for the Awards being September this year, Adele’s latest record-breaker 25, released in November, didn’t qualify.

Family Guy and American Dad! creator Seth MacFarlane is nominated in the Best Traditional Pop Vocal Album category. His jazz album No One Ever Tells Youis up against Tony Bennett, Bill Charlap, Josh Groban, Barry Manilow and Bob Dylan.

The Grammys will be held at Los Angeles’ Staples Center on February 15, 2016.
