David Guetta first DJ to hit 2b Spotify plays

David Guetta has become the first DJ to hit 2 billion plays on Spotify. He joins Eminem and Ed Sheeran on the highly exclusive list.

Guetta has two tracks which have had 200 million plays each – last year’s Bad (featuring Vassy) and Titanium (with Sia).

He is also the most-followed artist on Spotify with 6.8 million fans and 15 million plays per month.

The French superstar, who turns 48 in November, stated, “I want to thank you so much for helping me reach this incredible milestone, 2 billion streams on Spotify! Wow, mind blowing!”

Spotify ‘s Director of Label Relations Will Hope explained, "David Guetta is obviously one of the most popular artists on Spotify globally, so him smashing the 2 billion plays milestone should come as no surprise. But it is worth also noting that he achieved this landmark thanks to his huge fan base of over 15 million fans on Spotify who listen to his music every month, and who together helped him hit this landmark in record time."

Bart Cools, EVP Global Marketing and A&R of dance music for Warner Music Group added, “He is the first DJ to reach this milestone which is an amazing achievement. But looking at how dance is exploding at the moment as a genre, I am sure he will be followed by others very soon.”

His most recent single Hey Mama featuring Nicki Minaj, Bebe Rexha and long-term collaborator Afrojack has had 95 million global streams. The song, based on a 1940s prison song and which took him a year to pull together, is #6 on the Global Spotify charts.

To celebrate the 2 billion milestone, Guetta released a new remix of Hey Mama by Boaz van de Beatz.

Since his breakthrough in 2009 with the One Love album, he has sold nine million albums and 30 million singles around the world. He is the second highest paid DJ after Calvin Harris. In a recent interview, he said that he couldn’t get over the fact that when he released his first single Nation Rap, Afrojack was only three years old.
