Welcome to the neighbourhood: YouTube Music launches Aus curated playlists
YouTube Music this week released Neighbourhood Sounds, a collection of 13 playlists made up of music from various Australian cities and suburbs.
The 13 lists contain over 34 hours of songs, with more than 80% from Aussie artists, and features official tracks, live recordings, covers and remixes.
These are the neighbourhoods and their switched-on curators:
ABBOTSFORD by Helen Marcou and Quincy McLean who run Bakehouse Studios and founded the lobby group (Save Live Australia’s Music).
ADELAIDE CITY by Amber Cronin and Erin Fowler, co-founders of The Mill – a space that supports the development, networking and career development for young local artists.
ALICE SPRINGS by Rachel Perkins, filmmaker and owner of production company Blackfella Films (Bran Nue Day, Mabo, One Night The Moon, Radiance) created an outback soundtrack of folk, country and desert rock.
BONDI by Brenda Miley, competition director at Bondi Girls Surf Riders, and founder and director of Let’s Go Surfing.
BYRON BAY by Tommy “Dancing Man” Franklin, dancer and public speaker.
CANBERRA by Alex Carson, a dancer who tours with some of the world’s biggest artists and opts for the capital’s banging tracks.
FREMANTLE by Jodie Regan and Garth Carwardine, founders of record label Spinning Top Music which discovered Tame Impala, and who dig into west-coast psych rock and blues.
THE GARDENS by Mark Smith, Darwin-based music mentor and manager, and found some of Northern Territory’s gems while travelling to the Territory’s isolated communities assisting their bands.
MORNINGSIDE by Patience Hodgson and John Patterson of Brisbane band The Grates and owners of ‘Southside Tea Room’ a cafe and bar, wade through Briscore choices.
NEWTOWN by Jake Smyth and Kenny Graham of Newtown bar Mary’s Burgers explain why the inner west comes up trumps with garage rock.
SALAMANCA by Tasmanian photographer and climate activist Arwen Dyer, whose spirited playlist is to accompany those looking through the markets.
WINDSOR by Clint Hyndman, drummer/musician and owner of Yellow Bird Café on an indie rock search.
WOLLONGONG by Jeb Taylor, owner and operator of Music Farmers record store dug through his collection, including surf punk and rare funds, and shines a light on Wollongong’s musical renaissance.
