triple j responds to Twitter account ban after retweeting Kanye West

UPDATE: The Industry Observer understands that the triple j Plays account was suspended in error and that Twitter has since communicated this to the account owner and reinstated the account.

After getting its triple j Plays Twitter account banned for retweeting a Kanye West song, the broadcaster has issued a response to the ban.

Following an unexpected ban from Twitter for its triple j Plays account for retweeting a Kanye West song title, triple j has now issued a response about what happened.

“triple j’s Twitter account triple j Plays is currently out of action for mentioning Kanye West’s song ‘Black Skinhead’, after we played it on air recently,” triple j told The Industry Observer.

“We didn’t expect that we’d find ourselves involved in a Kanye Twitter beef… But don’t worry, we’ve been told by Twitter that it will be resolved soon.”

The triple j Plays Twitter account is one of the handiest and most prolific music-related Twitter accounts on the platform as it tweets out every song that’s played on triple j, which is great if listeners heard something they liked but didn’t know what the song title was.

But after tweeting song titles non-stop for seemingly forever (well, since the account was made back in 2009 anyway), the account mysteriously stopped tweeting on November 9th (as per Gizmodo).

The Racket host Lochlan Watt later confirmed on November 17th that the triple j Plays Twitter account was indeed temporarily banned for retweeting a seemingly offensive song title.

Watt followed that up later by further confirming on air that the song in question was in fact Kanye West’s 2013 song ‘Black Skinhead’.

While the account subsequently started tweeting songs again, it didn’t last very long and the most recent update dates back to November 23rd at the time of publishing.

The Industry Observer has contacted Twitter Australia for comment regarding the temporary ban for the triple j Plays account but had not received its statement at time of publishing.
