The ‘Game of Thrones’ album is coming

Winter is coming. Actually, it’s a long way off. We’re a year out from learning which of our favourite Game of Thrones characters will see out the show and who will be hacked to death (and maybe return as a milky-eyed popsicles). In the meantime, Game of Thrones nuts get hyped on the official soundtrack.

A partnership of Columbia Records and HBO, the forthcoming set will be titled Music Inspired by Game of Thrones. Not to be confused with the Grammy-nominated original soundtracks, the new GoT project will feature songs inspired by the fantasy series and showcase artists “from diverse musical genres,” according to Billboard.

Like the storyline for the eighth and final season, however, the creators of the GoT soundtrack haven’t leaked any tangible details. The tracklist and release date haven’t been announced, and its unclear if any of the rock and pop stars who’ve guested on the show will also appear on the companion album.

The stars have lined up for cameos on GoT, from Ed Sheeran to Coldplay drummer Will Champion and Snow Patrol’s Gary Lightbody, though Lily Allen (perhaps wisely) waved off a major role after deciding the part involved “too much incest”.

If Columbia wants to keep it all in-house, the Sony Music-owned label group has the likes of Adele, Beyonce and AC/DC on its U.S. roster.

We’re all still in the dark on when the final season will premiere, though HBO has revealed the final six, super-sized episodes will air sometime in 2019.
