Sydney’s Goodgod Small Club for sale
Major Sydney rock and EDM mecca, the Goodgod Small Club, is for sale. Owners Jimmy Sing and Hana Shimada say they want to move on to other projects after five years, and are hoping that the new owners will have a similar vision to theirs and continue the club’s legacy.
Sing and Shimada emphasise that the reason for the move is not related to Sydney’s infamous lockout laws or a downturn in economic fortunes saying this year has been among their best. It’s business as usual until the sale goes through.
They want to “explore other creative projects, perhaps involving a little more daylight”, they said in a statement.
They’re looking for “entrepreneurs with vision who believe they have the know-how, passion and resources to acquire the venue and evolve the legacy of this great place. We’re asking, who’s next?
“Five years ago we took over this Chinatown basement with the ambition of transforming it into an other-worldly place that didn’t fit the hospitality moulds that Sydney had on offer. We had our work cut out for us. The old basement was in a wretched state and we had no experience in running a venue.
“We poured all our time, borrowed money and energy into the venue and transformed it into what we imagined it could be; a place where music, food and nightlife came together in a way that was wild but welcoming, exotic yet homely, and extravagantly DIY.”
Situated at 55 Liverpool St Chinatown in the Sydney CBD, Goodgod incorporates the Front Bar based on 1950s Cuban nightclubs, which serves as an eaterie until DJs come on in the evenings, and Belly Bao which is part of the Front Bar.
The Danceteria is the live music and EDM venue which has different music each night. Acts t whihat have played there include Alt-J, Jamie XX, Diplo, Lorde, Pond, Shaggy, Flume, Eddy Current Suppression Ring, Z Deathrays, Josh Pyke and Cut Copy. In 2011 it won the SMAC of the Year cultural award
Goodgod has also been invited to curate events and stages at festivals as Vivid, Splendour In The Grass, OutsideIn and Laneway.
