Spotify launches new hub to spotlight songwriters
Spotify has launched a Songwriters Hub to provide a new lens on music making.
It spotlights songwriters in greater detail, for music fans to find out the talent behind the new tracks they’ve discovered – and possibly dive deeper to find more songs penned by the writer.
Not only does it give songwriters more recognition among their peers and the music industry at large, but it is intended to spark more writing collaborations.
Songwriter Pages launched in Beta in February to allow songwriters to share their work, and accumulated more than 127 billion streams.
The Hub will have Written By playlists, podcasts, devoted songwriter pages and specific features on different writers.
The first to be profiled is songwriter and producer Nija (born Nija Charles), the 23-year-old from New Jersey whose run of hits began in 2017 with Beyoncé and Jay-Z’s ‘Heard About Us’ and ‘LoveHappy’, Cardi B’s ‘I Do’ and ‘Ring’, Lady Gaga & Ariana Grande’s ‘Rain on Me’ and Chris Brown’s ‘No Guidance’.
Others to record her songs include Megan Thee Stallion, Trey Songz, Sean Paul, Maroon 5, A Boogie wit da Hoodie and Ty Dolla $ign.
“Having a hub for songwriters is extremely important because people need to know who these people are who are helping create the soundtrack to our lives,” Nija said.
“Songwriters deserve to be praised for their contributions just as much as artists and producers.
“A lot of times we get the short end of the stick, so I’m glad that there’s a place where people can see who’s writing their favourite songs.”
