Spotify share their most-streamed artists and songs of the decade

Spotify is gearing up to cap off a massive decade of streaming, announcing their most-streamed artists and songs for both 2019, and the last ten years.

It’s a pretty wild experience to take a look back at the year that was. Why, there’s every chance you’ve changed jobs, moved house, met some new friends, and even gone on a few holidays if finances have allowed.

Basically, things have changed quite a bit in the last 12 months, bu through it all, we’ve had music to help soundtrack our experiences.

But have you wondered how music has fared over the last year? Have you given a thought as to which artists resonated with folks the world over, and which songs got them through their day to day lives?

Well, Spotify have come to the rescue to answer that question, announcing the biggest milestones of the year as part of their ‘Wrapped’ campaign.

Yes, it has indeed been a pretty wild year for artists, songs, and albums for 2019, with Post Malone serving as the most-streamed artist (with more than 6.5 billion streams) thanks to his massive hits and huge new record, Hollywood’s Bleeding, which is the second most-streamed album this year.

Closely behind Posty though is Billie Eilish, whose debut album WHEN WE ALL FALL ASLEEP, WHERE DO WE GO? served as the most-streamed for the past 12 months and helped her surpass 6 billion streams in the last year alone.

Meanwhile, Ariana Grande, Ed Sheeran, and Bad Bunny round the rest of the most-streamed acts, while Camila Cabello & Shawn Mendes’ ‘Señorita’ is the most popular track with more than 1 billion streams, ahead of Eilish’s ‘bad guy’ (more than 990 million streams), Post Malone’s ‘Sunflower’, Ariana Grande’s ‘7 Rings’, and Lil Nas X’s ‘Old Town Road’.

On the Australian front, the lists look relatively similar, with Khalid slipping into the second spot, and switching the positions for Ed Sheeran and Ariana Grande.

Of course, the list of Aussie artists might come as no surprise, with the mighty Hilltop Hoods taking out top spot, as 5 Seconds of Summer, Dean Lewis, Tones And I, and Sticky Fingers rounding out the top five.

“We are incredibly proud to be a band from Australia,” 5 Seconds Of Summer said of the announcement. “We grew up in a small suburb of north western Sydney, so to have the opportunity to make music and be heard all around the world is really special to us.

“Streaming has certainly helped make our music more accessible and we feel very fortunate to live in a world where not only people can hear us but we can discover music we love also.”

“I’d just like to say THANK YOU for streaming my music, THANK YOU for being there for me! I love you all,” added Dean Lewis.

Meanwhile, Post Malone’s ‘Sunflower’ serves as the most-streamed track in the country, while Tones And I’s chart-topping ‘Dance Monkey’ serves as the second. Dean Lewis’ ‘Be Alright’ grabs second place in the list of homegrown tracks, with 5 Seconds Of Summer following closely behind in third position.

It doesn’t end there though, Spotify have also given us an insight to the last 10 years in music as well, giving us a longer view thanks to their ‘A Decade Wrapped’ campaign.

Undoubtedly, a quick peek at the charts might make this one easy to guess, with none other than Drake receiving the honour of the decade’s most-streamed artist. While Ed Sheeran and Post Malone follow closely, Ariana Grande serves as the only female in the list, with Eminem rounding out the top five.

Rihanna, Taylor Swift, Sia, and Beyoncé are the other most-streamed female artists of the last 10 years, while The Weeknd rounds out the top five for the male acts.

“What about the biggest songs?” we hear you ask, well, it would probably come as no surprise to learn that Ed Sheeran tops that list, with ‘Shape Of You’ not only setting chart records but bringing in more than 2.3 billion streams since its release.

Meanwhile, Drake’s ‘One Dance’, Post Malone’s ‘rockstar’, The Chainsmokers’ ‘Closer’, and Sheeran’s ‘Thinking Out Loud’ close out the list, proving that it there has never been a better time to be named Ed Sheeran in the world of music.

If you’re keen to learn more about your own personal listening habits, Spotify will be dishing out the individual ‘Wrapped’ campaign from tomorrow, so be sure to get in early, and have your fingers on your social buttons.
