Sounds Australia leads third trade mission to South America
After two trade missions to South America in 2016 and 2017, music export body Sounds Australia returns this month for a third visit – its largest one yet, and building on relationships developed so far.
The trade mission will visit Peru, Chile, Argentina and Brazil.
It has the support of the Australian government through the Council on Australia Latin America Relations (COALAR) of the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade.
In 2017 Latin America posted the largest revenue growth in the world according to the IFPI’s Global Music Report.
Total recorded music revenues were up by 17.7%, with especially strong showings from Brazil (up 17.9%), Peru (up 21.7%) and Chile (up 14.3%), driven largely by a 48.9% increase in streaming revenue.
The trade mission delegates include Andrew Stone (Chugg Music), Coco Eke (Bad Apples Music), Joel Byrne (Music SA / Sundial Productions), Joshua Olson (Hillsong Music), Katie Besgrove (Look Out Kid / Barely Dressed Records), Maggie Collins (BIGSOUND / Morning Belle), Rowan Robinson (Macro Music) and Sabrina Robertson (Native Tongue Music Publishing / Maths & Magic).
With additional support from various Australian embassies, Sounds Australia presents its signature Aussie BBQ.
Alexander Biggs, Deep Sea Arcade and Birdz showcase at Fluvial (Valdivia, Chile) and Bafim (Buenos Aires, Argentina), with the addition of Jess Cornelius and Chela at SIM (São Paulo, Brazil).
Millie Millgate, executive producer at Sounds Australia says, “The key to building effective pathways and access for Australian artists in international markets is continued investment and a commitment to returning to new territories.
“One-off visits, whilst enjoyable, are not strategic and we are grateful that DFAT through COALAR have shared our vision and supported consecutive trade missions in order to harness the increasing opportunities being heralded for Australian artists and music companies across Latin America.”
As part of the visit, Sounds Australia partners with Australasian music rights organisation APRA AMCOS and its Brazilian counterpart UBC to deliver the first-ever SongHubs collaborative songwriting residency in the region.
Over three days, producer Dudu Borges’ studio will host showcasing artists Alexander Biggs, Chelsea Wheatley (Chela), Jess Cornelius, Nathan Bird (Birdz) and Deep Sea Arcade’s Nic McKensie and Nick Weaver alongside fellow Australians Lila Gold and Mitch Kenny, as well as Brazilian guests including multiple Latin Grammy-nominee Celso Fonseca, writer and A Little Nation vocalist Samille Joker, songwriter Bibi, singer and composer Gloria Groove and production duo Los Brasileros.
Sounds Australia’s export music producer Glenn Dickie will serve as the Brazilian curator, assigning creative teams to work together on writing and recording a new song each day.
