ABC’s $1 million podcast fund strengthens Aussie audio industry

The ABC’s 2017 landmark initiative of a $1 million podcast fund has been lauded as a huge success.

The initiative launched in October last year, when submissions opened for funding to work alongside the creative team at ABC Audio Studios to produce a distinctive and compelling podcast.

The ABC has revealed just how successful the initiative has been, with the public call-out attracting 1273 submissions after the fund was announced at OzPod 2017.

The $1 million podcast fund has also helped the ABC provide professional development training to more than 10 freelance audio producers across Australia.

Vale Ron Casey

Controversial radio and TV sports presenter Ron Casey passed away this week at the age of 89.

Casey’s career spanned more than 70 years and included stints at 2GB, 2SM and 2KY. He was awarded the Order of Australia medal in 1988 for his services to Australian television and sport.

The broadcaster was also no stranger to controversy. In 1988, he was involved in a heated exchange with Jana Wendt on A Current Affair over Asian Immigration.

He also infamously got into a punch-up with singer Normie Rowe on Ray Martin’s Midday Show in 1991 during a debate on whether Australia should become a republic.

An on-air comment about indigenous Australians effectively ended his career on 2GB in 2000.
