Powderfinger reunite to ‘bring a smile’ with YouTube fundraiser
Powderfinger is the latest act to swing their weight behind Support Act.
The band announced plans this morning to reunite on May 23 for a performance on their YouTube channel from their respective home studios, titled One Night Lonely.
The One Night Lonely title signifies the performance is a one-off for the music charity, whose services are in demand by musicians and arts workers during the pandemic.
The streaming begins at 7 pm AEST and the set will feature a medley of their biggest hits including ‘My Happiness’, ‘These Days’, ‘Sunsets’, ‘On My Mind’, ‘Burn Your Name’ and ‘Pick You Up’.
Funds raised by Powderfinger will also go to Beyond Blue, which has experienced a 59% increase in the number of people contacting its support services compared to the same period last year.
“The five of us have been meeting regularly over the past few months to organise some Odyssey Number Five anniversary releases,” the band said.
“The idea came up of playing together again in this unusual format which we all thought would be fun. The past few months have been a very strange time for us all and difficult days for many.
“We really just want to bring a smile to some people’s faces and along the way raise some funds to help our music industry mates and people who are currently experiencing mental health issues.”
Ruuben van den Heuvel, YouTube’s regional head of music partnerships, said the influence and reach of YouTube with music “makes the world a better place”.
“This has never been more true than during these days,” he said.
“We’re pumped to be able to help bring the highly anticipated One Night Lonely reunion of Powderfinger into Aussies’ homes and support some amazing charities at the same time.”
