What is it like to be the CEO of a publicly listed music company?

“Because we’re public I can’t talk about it [Jaxsta] to my mum, I often can’t even talk about it to Louis [Schoorl] who’s a co-founder. I can’t talk about it to my girlfriends, I can’t talk about it to my male best friends.”

Fear At The Top sees CEO of The Brag Media Luke Girgis interview heads of companies in the music industry about how they got to where they are. He also touches on all the mistakes they’ve made, and what they’ve learned from running their hugely successful companies.

In this episode of Fear At The Top, Girgis interviews Jacqui Louez Schoorl, the CEO and Co-Founder of Jaxsta Enterprise.

Jaxsta is the world’s largest source of official credit information for artists, musicians, songwriters, producers, engineers and other members of the music community. It is content-owner supplied rather than crowd-sourced, and it launched in Pro Beta last month after almost three years in beta.

Jacqui’s career spans two decades across film and music, but since 2006, she has been spent creating an app and website for the music industry, Jaxsta, the go-to resource for all things music-related.

During the expansive chat, the pair discuss the serious ramifications that come to light if a mistake is made, and the loneliness that comes with running a publicly listed company.

“When we were private there were so many things I could workshop with other friends in business […] and the ability to do that [now] almost eviscerates,” she said. “It’s really lonely sometimes, and I find that can be really hard […] and I don’t know about you Luke, but when I ask other CEOs of companies, be it public or private, they often say the same thing to me.”

As a CEO himself, Luke Girgis offers his own take on the Fear At The Top:

“Being a CEO is like being in the centre of a really crowded room,” he says. “But somehow you’re in a fish bowl, so you’re unable to interact with anyone else, and you’re naked and everyone is looking at you.

“So although there are all these people around [that] you can signal to – even yell through the glass and communicate with and ask for help – at the end of the day, you’re the one on show, fully exposed for everyone to interrogate. You are, after all, the one naked at the centre of the crowded room.”

The go-to authoritative source of music information, Jaxsta is collecting music metadata from major and independent record labels, publishers, royalty agencies and industry associations across the globe. The data is de-duplicated, cross-referenced, deep-linked and then made available online within a multi-functional, ever-evolving platform.

Jaxsta’s head office is based in Sydney, with representatives in New York, London and Los Angeles.
