Perth’s Bakery closing in May; Jimmy’s Den opens
One of Perth’s best-known live music venues, The Bakery, is closing on May 9. The building was sold last August, and a major redevelopment is planned.
The Bakery, in Northbridge, has been in business for 13 years, hosting Australian and international acts, and serving as the home of the WA Music Awards.
The club’s manager, Artrage, plans on “giving the old girl the send-off she deserves”, according to CEO Marcus Canning. It will curate a series of daily farewell shows from April 29 under the name The Last Toast Bakery Farewell. An international name will headline one of the nights.
“We see The Last Toast program as a chance for the tens of thousands of local artists, musicians, promoters, punters and staff that have been involved with The Bakery in some way over the last 13 years to share one last Bakery moment before we bid her a permanent bon voyage,” Canning said.
In the meantime, Perth gets a new 200-capacity called Jimmy’s Den in Northbridge’s James Street. It is set up by Bar Pop, who specialise in pop-up bars.
Bar Pop director Chris Bausor said, "We stumbled across a great old space in the heart of Northbridge that needed to be brought back to life. Jimmy's Den will become the unofficial home of live music in WA."
