Survey 7: Nova 100 & Hughesy and Kate #1 FM

The results from the 7th metro survey of 2013 have been released.

The two big stories come from the 2 largest markets. In Sydney, Kyle & Jackie O have increased their lead over their FM rivals while in Melbourne, Nova 100 are now the #1 FM station in the market along with their breakfast team, Hughesy & Kate.

Also celebrating were Perth’s Mix 94.5 who returned to the #1 spot after the finale of The Bunch, and Mix 102.3 in Adelaide who registered their 10th #1 survey in a row and their 30th #1 FM in a row.

See all the results and full analysis here.

All three Group PDs on the Kyle & Jackie O Mix move

While talking to all 3 group PD’s about their individual survey 7 results, we also asked them to comment on the potential Kyle & Jackie O move to Mix 106.5. First, the official word from ARN programming boss, Duncan Campbell: “Talks have commenced but nothing has been agreed. They only announced that they were leaving on Friday and we’re sitting here on Monday so that’s the status as it stands at the moment.”

dmg’s Group PD Paul Jackson said: “If the rumours are true and Kyle and Jackie O were to go to Mix, that strikes me as a very strange decision. Mix to me is a conservative station playing a very different game from where 2Day FM is at so it doesn’t naturally translate that the audience just follows you.”

SCA’s Head of Content Craig Bruce told us: “I’m pretty close to the real story, as opposed to the other versions that I read in newspapers and on blogs. My position on it at the moment would be it’s incredibly unlikely. Firstly, they would have to change format, they’d have to rebrand, and they’d have to go and look at their client list. That’s not to say that it won’t happen but I just don’t get that sense that it’s as close as people are thinking it is.” READ MORE

Craig Bruce: ’nothing lasts forever’

Hot off the back of the announcement that Kyle & Jackie O were finishing up at 2Day FM after 13 years together, I caught a few minutes with SCA’s Head of Content, Craig Bruce, who said: “Things come to an end. Nothing lasts forever, my job is to make sure when these moments come along we are as ready as we can be and we are.

“We’re finishing up with one of the most exhilarating FM breakfast show in Australian radio history. We know exactly what we’re about to face next year but every single one of us is excited about the new year. We’ll have 3 new shows in our biggest markets, Melbourne and Sydney breakfast and likely a change on national drive.” READ MORE

Kyle: the raw interview

Last year, Radio Today’s Scott Muller had a lengthy chat with Kyle Sandilands.

After the news that Kyle & Jackie O will be finishing up after more than a decade with SCA, we thought we’d relive the chat.

Kyle goes into depth about:

  • his rise from regional stations to Sydney breakfast and stardom
  • the fictional character his show is based on
  • the controversies, and his thoughts on the press
  • the circumstance of his last ever air-check with a Program Director
  • the advice he’d give himself (and anyone else in radio still in their 20s) if he could go back in time
  • the industry legend he mistook for the paparazzi!
  • and much more.
