Native Tongue signs NZ pop chart breaker ASHY

Native Tongue Music Publishing has signed New Zealand pop chart breaker ASHY.

Over the past few years, ASHY has generated two million streams working with New Zealand and Australian pop producers.

They include Josh Fountain of Leisure (BENEE, Openside), Sydney-based Universal Music producer Liam Quinn (Ruel, G-Flip, Illy) and Sam Trevethick aka voices of drum and bass outfit Shapeshifter.

She’s come up with personality sparkling singles as the dubby ‘Over You’ which reached #5 in NZ, ‘Pretty Lies’ which was also a charter and generated 300,000 views, ‘Jersey’, EGO’ which got her chosen as Apple Music’s Artist of the Week, ‘All Eyes Are On Me’ and ‘Temporary Crush.

She is a frequent face on Christchurch’s live scene.

“ASHY has released some of my favourite pop tracks of the last two years and I’m delighted Native Tongue is now part of her team,” Pennie Black, general manager of Native Tongue New Zealand, said.

“ASHY’s charisma is apparent and her talent and songwriting skills are exceptional; we can’t wait for ASHY’s star to continue to rise.”

The singer-songwriter said she is incredibly excited to sign with Native Tongue.

“I can’t wait to see what the future holds with this solidified partnership.”

Ashy Bachelor started to learn guitar and singing when she was eleven, two years later writing her own songs under the tutelage of her music teacher who had his own studio.

Leaving high school with the sole aim of recording, she managed herself, hustled for breaks and worked with various producers.

She entered talent competitions Play It Strange and Smokefree Rockquest, appeared on children’s TV, and was a contestant on the second season of X Factor NZ.

Her latest single sees her collaborating with fellow Christchurch artist Vallé (Papua New Guinea-born hip hop act Enjalas Jenkinson).

Its title, ‘Mirror’, is about representation in mainstream media.

She explains: “This is a story about the first time I saw someone that looked like me in mainstream media.

“It’s about what that represented and how it gave me the confidence to want to be that too; for someone else. A mirror.

“This song is fun in nature, because we had the best time making it!”
