Meet the Breakthrough Songwriter noms for the APRA Global Music Awards

Launching this year, the APRA Global Music Awards celebrate the international success of Australasian artists. Residing in the Los Angeles, Nashville and London areas respectively, the nominees for ‘Breakthrough Songwriter of the Year’ all have one thing in common – their resonance on the global stage.

Boasting an unprecedented amount of international songwriting talent, these artists have gained credits in many hit songs we know and love.

Household names such as Ruel and Mallrat, both now based in Los Angeles, dominate the list of nominees. Discovered by Grammy-winning producer M-Phazes, 17-year-old prodigy Ruel has maintained momentum with an ARIA and Kid’s Choice Award under his belt. Mallrat herself is a Platinum-selling artist, securing top-ten spots in both the ARIA charts and triple j’s Hottest 100.

Producers Twice As Nice also represent LA whose infamous collaborations with Ariana Grande and Rihanna are equally as impressive as fellow resident, Kito. Her sonic genius has landed her in partnerships with huge names such as Kelly Rowland and Normani.

The duo Seaforth have solidified themselves in the world of country music through signing a worldwide deal with Sony Nashville. Alongside fellow nominee and Grammy-award winner Paul Mabury; they remain indomitable contenders for the award.

Powerhouse wordsmiths Sinead Burgess and Ruby Boots are also strong runners for Nashville. They hold an impressive array of awards between them, with Burgess herself impacting the US Top 100 album charts.

Heading up the London domain are Byron Bay locals Parcels, whose Berlin-infused electro-pop sound landed them a collaboration with Daft Punk. Lyrical mastermind and Melburnian, nominee Chiara Hunter has written for artists such as Take That and Dua Lipa. She is nominated alongside fellow Londoner, previous The Voice contestant Cloves who’s name has adorned both Coachella and Lollapalooza line-ups. Collaborating with the likes of Flo Rida and Steve Aoki make Steven Manovski a deserving final nominee for UK’s finest.

No matter who is ultimately honoured, many of these artists are achieving unimaginable success far beyond their humble beginnings on Aussie soil. The instigation of the awards themselves proves APRA’s dedication to celebrating the musical talent our part of the world has to offer.
