Lee Sugar Lands Sweet Deal With [PIAS]

Lee Sugar is the latest signing to [PIAS], scoring a global deal with the independent music powerhouse.

Announced today (Aug. 9), the multi-hyphenate Sydney-based alt-pop artist celebrates the deal with the release of new single “Sunshine,” together with its official, self-directed and self-shot music video.

“From the moment we first heard Lee’s music, we jumped head first into his world,” comments Sophie Brown, A&R and marketing manager at [PIAS] Australia.

“We can’t wait for everyone to fall in love with his upcoming releases and are so excited for him to be joining [PIAS] Australia”.

Adds label director Mari Stuart, “We are so delighted to welcome Lee Sugar to the [PIAS] Australia roster, and it feels fitting to share this news with the release of ‘Sunshine’ – it totally encapsulates Lee’s approach to art and creativity, full of warmth and absolutely captivating.”

Produced by Len20 (Lil Nas X, Cordae, Kid Cudi, “Sunshine” is a few minutes of good, clean fun, built on a bossa nova vibe — a “feel good number about love and summer,” Lee Sugar explains.

It’s been a year since Sugar debuted with the chill-out R&B cut “Cuckoo.”

A string of tunes followed, including “Wavepool” and “What I Don’t Know,” earning attention from triple j Unearthed, and triple j airplay, and securing support slots for the likes of Milan Ring, bella amor, Daste, and showcase spots at Bigsound 2022.

[PIAS] (or Play It Again Sam) has been an indie standout for four decades.

The music company was founded in Belgium back in 1982 by Kenny Gates and Michel Lambot, recipients of IMPALA’s Outstanding Contribution honour, awarded this year to commemorate its 40th anniversary.

In early 2017, [PIAS] made its move into Australia when it acquired Inertia Music, effective from April 1 of that year.

Inertia Music’s Label Group rebranded to [PIAS] Australia in 2021.
