Laneway’s five Australian shows draw over 60,000
The five Australian Laneway festivals drew a total of 61,150 music fans, making its most successful run to date. Not surprising: it proved to be a great late summer festival experience, with a diverse mix bill and less queues.
These included established live drawcards as Flume (“I’ve got some new music to play. Some of it you’ll get. Some of it, you won’t”), Violent Soho, Grimes, The Smith Street Band, CHVRCHS, Hermitude, Royal Headache, Vince Staples and The Internet who drew packed crowds, and aroster of relative newcomers rising to greatness, as Methyl Ethel, Banoffee, Slum Sociable, High Tension and Shamir.
Melbourne (15,000), Brisbane (13,500). Sydney (12,500) and Fremantle (12,500) were sold out before the tour began. The big surprise was Adelaide, which doubled attendance from last year to 7,600.
Organisers reported, “We also saw improvements in each location with louder stages, better shading, more utilities, food, beverages and market options, artist vinyl signings at local record stalls and easier methods of transport to and from the venues.
“triple j brought their live broadcast of the event to Adelaide, giving audiences outside of the city a chance to tune in to the full day of live performances and interviews with their favourite artists. Less than 24 hours after playing Laneway Fremantle, Thundercat went on to collect a Grammy award for his work with Kendrick Lamar for collaborative track These Walls”.
We haven’t got their 2016 figures but Laneway’s international shows have traditionally drawn 13,000 in Singapore and 10,000 in Auckland.
