Kickass Torrents aborts crowdfunding campaign

An ambitious effort to resurrect notorious torrent website Kickass Torrents (KAT) has fallen flat after its crowdfunding project was taken down.

KAT owners and administrators recently launched the crowdfunding campaign through GoFundMe, specifying a target of $7,000 to cover the costs of web development, server costs and a professional tech team to help reinstate the site.

According to KAT user johnno23, the targeted amount would only cover the costs of running the website for two months.

The project had raised approximately $1,116 from a total of 48 donors over the course of a few days, proving the website sports a strong band of supporters.

Despite the support to see the site restored and the funds raised, it is unclear as to why the project was aborted. Reports suggest that public discourse and recent media coverage of the project had caused authorities to become involved.

Another report suggests that the actual campaign was in violation of GoFundMe’s terms of service, prompting the site to shut down the project all together.

“For some reason, some envious people just live for the sole purpose of seeing others fail despite having no reason at all,” KAT owners and administrators said in an official comment.

Kickass Torrent’s legal troubles have been well documented over the last month. The alleged owner of the torrent website was arrested by US authorities in late July and the site’s content and domain were seized.

Some websites have impressively evaded legal repercussions from the recent crackdowns, benefiting from the downfall of their competitors. Major torrent website The Pirate Bay is discreetly celebrating its 13th anniversary, boasting unrivalled search numbers and torrent usage over the last few months.
