DMA’S Johnny Took and Small Time Group Launch Melbourne Studio

Melbourne has an exciting new creative space thanks to a partnership between Steve Hibberd and Johnny Took of the DMA’S.

Fuelled by their shared love of music and dedication to developing artists, the pair launched Small Time Studios last week, a selection of atmospheric writing rooms in the heart of Brunswick.

The new venue features a sizeable collection of gear, including synths, guitars, and microphones, for artists to utilise during their recording sessions, ensuring they have access to the finest equipment to fully realise their musical vision.

Small Time Studios currently has three writing rooms – with more to come – and one production studio. Inviting common spaces are on hand to facilitate artists, writers, and producers getting to know each other, whether it’s over a casual game of pool or a conversation on on the rooftop patio.

The venue’s bar is also stocked with some enticing drinks thanks to Small Time Studio’s partnership with local brewery, Bodriggy, and Grainshaker Australian Vodka.

For Steve, who launched Small Time Group in 2019 alongside Liz Hibberd, the opening of Small Time Studios is the latest chapter in his continuing mission to support and empower artists.

“After a challenging launch and subsequent years through multiple lockdowns and plans changing constantly, the unwavering support of so many people in the music industry has been overwhelming, we’re really thankful,” he says. “We’re pumped to  finally be able to 100% focus on the music, and to be launching Small Time Studios with  Johnny, Hayley and family.”

Johnny is just as enthused about the venture. “I couldn’t be more excited to team up with my mate Steve on this journey that involves our mutual passion for music! Being able to use my love and experience of songwriting to provide a space for creativity is a dream come true. Small Time Studios has the infrastructure to be able to support and educate young musicians, a space like this holds so much potential and its location in the heart of Brunswick couldn’t be more perfect.”

For interested artists, Small Time Studios is now open for bookings online. Pre-purchased packages are also available for companies with artist rosters, with the promise of favourable rates.
