Jaws to follow The Bodyguard to Australia?
Next year could see Jaws In Concert staged in Australia as part of a world tour. This follows news that The Bodyguard – The Musical is hitting these shores next April for a national tour..
Jaws In Concert will feature the screening of Steven Spielberg’s 1975 thriller accompanied by the Boston Pops orchestra performing John Williams’ classic soundtrack at the appropriate places.
Jaws In Concert is heading for shows around the world next year, Billboard reported. The countries involved will be announced shortly. In Australia the movie was a huge smash, and was even instrumental in shaping Western Australia’s shark policy.
Williams’ Oscar-winning theme music, later ranked the sixth-greatest score by the American Film Institute, became synonymous with impending danger. Williams described the theme as “grinding away at you, just as a shark would do, instinctual, relentless, unstoppable”, adding he’d used a tuba rather than a French horn to make it “more threatening.”
The concert version will not feature new material from Williams but includes a five minute piece that did not make it onto the soundtrack.
In the meantime, Australian music theatre producer John Frost has teamed with UK producers David Ian and Michael Harrison to bring The Bodyguard – The Musical to Australia for the first time. It begins its run in Sydney.
The musical was first staged abroad four years ago, based on the music from the 1992 movie starring Whitney Houston and Kevin Costner.
Aside from the well known numbers from the movie soundtrack – including I Will Always Love You, Queen Of The Night and I Have Nothing – there are new numbers by Alexander Dinelaris.
It has just finished a sold out season in the UK, Ireland and Europe, and this year opens in Korea, Italy and the US.
